Help Students Deal with Conflicts

Conflict Resolution Discussion Cards

by Vanessa Harrison

Conflict can happen anytime and with teenagers it can be in school, at home or in the community.

These cards feature a scenario involving a situation of conflict to read out followed by three questions to kick-start a discussion about the issues raised.

The scenarios include conflicts with peers, family, teachers and other adults including figures of authority. Students discuss the situation and suggest strategies for resolving the conflict.

They can call upon the ideas on the Resolution Cards if necessary, which include:

Conflict Resolution Cards

 Be assertive but not aggressive
• State your needs calmly and quietly
• Try to understand the other person’s point of view
• Listen carefully to what the other person is saying
• Walk away until you calm down
• Use “I” statements
• Work together to find a solution
• Speak firmly, honestly and kindly
• Apologise

Through the discussion students will begin to realise that there are strategies and attitudes that can be adopted to help prevent conflict escalating and that resolution is possible if both sides are prepared to work together.

For the facilitator there are guidance cards which include:

• An introduction to the topic with the aims of the resource
• Benefits students may gain through using the cards
• Ideas for teacher-led discussions
• Suggestions for pairs and group work
• How to incorporate role-play
